Food, supplements, toys and anything made for kids 12 and under are not in the first wave. Here is why, and how they get in.

Makerbay opens with the goods most makers sell: jewelry, clothing, bags and leather, home goods and candles, woodwork, handmade knives, pottery, bath and body, art and prints, paper goods, craft supplies, wedding and party goods, 3D printed goods and digital downloads.

What waits

Three groups of goods are not in the first wave. None of them are banned for good. Each one comes with its own rules, federal and then again state by state, and we would rather open a category properly than open it early and pull it later. The full list, including what will never be sold here, is on What can be sold.

Food and drink

Most states' home kitchen laws only allow sales inside the maker's own state. Shipping across state lines usually means a licensed or inspected kitchen, and some foods, like shelf-stable sauces, need a tested recipe and federal filings first.

Supplements and herbal remedies

Federal law treats a product that claims to treat or prevent a disease as a drug, and supplements have their own manufacturing and labeling rules. Before these open, listings need a way to screen claims, so one careless sentence does not put a maker on the wrong side of the law.

Toys and anything made for children 12 and under

That includes baby clothes and kids' jewelry. Children's products fall under federal safety rules: lead and other limits, testing or a small-batch registration, and tracking labels. Several states add their own lead limits on top. These open when sellers can file that paperwork right in their listing.

How a category gets in

Requests decide. If you make something in a category that is not open yet, say so on the category request form. When enough makers ask for one, we work through its rules, get them checked and open it with those checks built into listing.

The rule that does not change

Whatever opens, the first rule holds: you made it, or you designed it. Every listing says which one. Made by the seller, designed by the seller, or designed by the seller with AI help.
